OUR World 1st Indoor Rowing Regatta says it all!  

The Cool Rowings Sport Relief Indoor Regatta create waves in  Romford, bringing an innovative new approach to rowing-inspired sport/fundraising directly to children, schools, Scouts and youth organisations.

Mercury Shopping Centre in Romford, demonstrates that young people do not need access to a river, a boat or even a conventional indoor rowing machine to experience the excitement, teamwork and competitive spirit associated with rowing!

Supported by One of Rowing’s Most Historic Clubs

The Cool Rowings initiative has also received valued support from Steve O’Connor, General Manager of the prestigious Leander Club, one of the world’s most historic and successful rowing clubs.

Leander Club has an extraordinary place in British rowing history and has been associated with some of the greatest names in the sport, including Sir Steve Redgrave, Britain’s five-time consecutive Olympic rowing gold medallist.

For an innovative grassroots concept such as Cool Rowings to receive encouragement from a figure representing an institution of Leander’s standing provides an important connection between the heritage of traditional rowing and a new, accessible way of introducing young people to the spirit of the sport.

From First Experience to Future Opportunity

At the heart of Cool Rowings is a simple ambition: give a child an opportunity to experience the excitement of rowing-inspired competition, regardless of their background, physical ability or access to traditional rowing facilities.

That first experience could become much more.

A child who discovers an enthusiasm for rowing through Cool Rowings could be encouraged to progress into traditional rowing, join a club, compete at regional or national level and potentially pursue opportunities within education, scholarships, elite competition or international sport.

Founded by Weininger Irwin, the UK’s first Gladiator Champion, Cool Rowings takes inspiration from the ingenuity of the Jamaican bobsleigh story. Just as the Jamaican team found alternative ways to prepare for a winter sport without having conventional facilities available to them, Cool Rowings removes some of the traditional barriers to experiencing rowing.

Sport, Fundraising and Community

The Cool Rowings Sport Relief Indoor Regatta combines physical activity and friendly competition with fundraising, giving participating young people an opportunity not only to compete but also to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

It is about participation, teamwork, confidence, inclusion, community and aspiration.

Cool Rowings is demonstrating that the journey into sport does not always have to begin in the traditional place.

You don’t need a river to discover rowing.
You don’t need a boat to discover competition.
And you don’t need a rowing machine to discover potential.

Weininger Irwin is a British community sports leader, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and the founder of Cool Rowings and Ageless Teenagers. He is best known for becoming UK’s first ITV Gladiators Champion and has since used sport and exercise to promote health, inclusion, and community engagement.

• He works with schools, scouts, youth groups, community organisations, and older adults across East London and Essex.
